Mooncakes : 月餅

heck!
it's already mooncake time of year already!
the word "mooncake" sounds so... so... so dreamy and nice, but actually i don't even like them...

these little (yet heavy) pastries
are sold and eaten during the build-up to the mid-autumn festival (中秋節)
(not that it even feels like mid-autumn here, let alone autumn with temperatures still reaching close to 34 degrees!!)

these doughy snacks usually consist of a whole salty egg yolk surrounded by a lotus seed paste. the egg yolk symbolizing the full moon of course.
i need to beef-up a bit so maybe i should be tackling one of these as they are choca-block with calories.
a whopping 790 calories per mooncake! talk about a full moon!!
you can even find mooncakes with four eggs in them! now that's just crazy if you ask me. i mean, come on! death wish!

don't get me wrong though, many people love them!
remember i'm just the gweilo (foreigner) here in hong kong so maybe you shouldn't take my word for it.

yesterday the first batch of mooncakes arrived at my office from some customer.
the secretary quickly cut them up into quarters for us to enjoy.
my excuse... i was still full from lunch.

a few years ago the ice cream giant
häagen-dazs joined in on this ancient celebration so i'm hanging out for their ice cream version of the mooncake; a definite favorite in our office.
never too full for one of these!!

but first, bring on autumn!!

geez. 790. i try to avoid the yolk when I "have to" eat them at any relatives place. It's always divided in to quarters so thats like 200 a piece. But you have to go around 4 relatives sometimes. And they make you eat the leftovers. Shit that's like 1200 right there.

Thanks for the useful piece of advice.

i don't like mooncakes either. didn't realise they were so full of calories though!

but i must admit- i still eat them whenever they're in front of me. but that's just cause i'm a pig (with no self control) who likes to stuff my face. haha

hahaha, i can so imagine you "stuffing your face" with mooncake all the while with an unpleasant look on your face!
what is the one thing you wouldn't eat if put infront of you??

i will definitely not stuff my face if i'm presented with crab, prawn, shrimp or lobster. i know a lot of people think this is the best food in the world, but ever since i was a kid, i've hated it! can't even put it in my mouth.

once, i was in vietnam, and my aunt had put together a feast just for me, and guess what we were having...yes! the above mentioned food! well, i suffered in silence and swallowed what i could and put the rest in my napkin!

i noticed when i was in vietnam they used quite a lot of prawns and shrimps. i can imagine the horror for you at having to smile and eat something you hate!

i don't mind shrimp, and i only like crabs when someone does all the dirty work for me!
