maruyama coffee : 丸山珈琲

it was hard to find a good cake in hong kong (unless you paid top dollar).
since moving back to japan i have realised that i've been eating way too many cakes. even the cakes from the good old conbini (convenience store) taste pretty darn good.

i didn't go without my piece of cake today too.

obaasan suggested that we go for a drive to a cafe that she often goes to with her friends; so that's what we did. we popped kou-chan into his baby car-seat and off we went.

the outside of maruyama cafe doesn't really look like a cafe at all but more like a huge new warehouse. the building is actually separated into three sections; a shop, the cafe, and the coffee bean roasting room.

so how was the coffee?
very good considering this cafe is kinda in the middle of nowhere. actually the location has nothing to do with it; one of the baristas who works here won a top prize at the japan barista championships.

as i have a sweet-tooth i couldn't resit the caramel cake; an earl grey sponge cake infused with apple compote topped off with caramel cream. yum!!

i can see why obaasan like this cafe but my only grudge is the price; it's a tad expensive...

I'm with Sun on the Earl Grey bit - love it! And the atmosphere of this place must be quite different from the usual cafe.

I can just imagine the aroma wafting in from the coffee bean roasting room. Yummilicious. :)

i can definitely identify with you on this one. i have a huge sweet tooth too! i feel like i haven't had a proper meal if i can't end it with something sweet!

and i really miss the selection of sweets and food at the japanese convenience stores. norwegian convenience stores are sooo primitive in comparison.

that cake looks delicious! it would have been even better if it had been deep fried! (just kidding..)

earl grey cakes are the best; and this place certainly knows how to whip one up.
if you were in japan i'd take you here for a coffee and cake; your shout! (hehehe)

there is a huge range of sweets targeted towards guys here in japan and i've noticed some of them are earl grey flavored. maybe it's a guy thing?

although this cafe is quite open-spaced it didn't feel huge and empty; quite warm actually.

i so need something sweet after a meal too (and no, fruit doesn't count)
today i'm gonna have a custard-pudding which is made especially for men. seriously.

Mmmm. Wish that was true though. Devil doesn't like Earl Grey at all; sticks to his English Breakfast he does. Ah well. To each his own.

And it DOES look warm and cosy despite the space. Some places just get it right. :)

oh well, knew there had to be one guy out there who doesn't like earl grey.
not complaining though, all the more for us!

the pudding was delish! had a real rich taste to it with a yummy maple sauce. there is another one put out by the same company (morinaga milk) which has a salty-caramel sauce. will have to try this one out too!

I was reading Casa Brutus today and saw this cafe in it. They must have very good coffee.
