thank you obaachan!

i'm very sleep deprived but otherwise thoroughly enjoying my new role in life as a dad.
gotta say though, looking after a new born baby is much more demanding than i imagined.
little kou-chan sleeps most of the time, but when he wakes up for a feed his tiny lungs go into overdrive and he cries and thrashes his pale little arms and legs about. amazing that such a wee thing can make that much noise!
but once he gets that first gulp of breast-milk his eyes light-up and he suddenly becomes one of those model babies on tv; all cute and cuddly.

i also didn't realize that babies like to poop soon after you have changed their soiled nappy...
nappy manufactures must be raking in the cash with the amount of nappies we get through.
can't imagine how my mum got on using cotton nappies back in the day.

oh and last night was a bit of a milestone for me.
i finally got the courage to trim kou-chan's finger nails.
with all that calcium he's getting his nails grow about as fast as jack's beanstalk. and we all know that long nails and babies don't go hand in hand. god, why is it that babies like to scratch themselves in the face?!
the little mittens we bought him didn't do much good... kou-chan had them off in no time.
so i waited until he was fast asleep and held his slender fingers between my huge adult ones and went snip snip. believe me, it was a real hold-your-breath moment!
i was on a roll. so with all finger tips intact i even gave him a bath.
he loves his bath and basically just lies back soaking in the warm water. he's obviously very relaxed as he often creates a little fountain in the bath (yup, he piddled in the bath...)
no number 2s as of yet!

not that obaachan (k-chan's mum) will or can read this, but i wanna say a big arigatou! (thank you) to her for all her help. amazing what a difference a pair of experienced hands can make.
not only is she great at helping out with kou-chan, she is also an amazing cook.
since she arrived on our shores from japan last week she had whipped up delicious meals one after the other using only ingredients found hiding in our fridge.
who would have guessed our fridge contained ingredients to make nikujyaga, tempura, or even tandoori chicken!

so arigatou obaachan! これからも宜しくお願いしますね!

wow- you're life sure has changed a lot! sounds like you're really enjoying your role as a dad. i can image that you are going to be an excellent father.

maybe i can be the naughty uncle that visits from norway from time to time and spoils him rotten, like give him candy and money when you're not looking. haha

I'm sure it was really nerve-wrecking cutting little kou-chan's finger nails for the first time... but you'd be super-experienced like your obaachan in no time at all! :P

i'm now a pro and changing nappies so give me a few more goes at trimming his nails and i just may be experienced enough to open my own manicure salon!
