obaachan has now gone home to the land of the rising sun.
with a very limited english vocabulary i was pretty proud of obaachan helping us out with some basic errands while she was here.
i taught her how to take the subway to and from our apartment to the local japanese supermarket.
the other day she trotted off to the supermarket with a mission.
her mission: to buy some plain natural yoghurt.
sounds pretty easy-peasy but when you are used to seeing the word for "yoghurt" looking like this: "ヨーグルト", it does make matters a little more challenging.
a few nappy changes later and obaachan returns home with a bag full of goodies.
as i helped her unpack i noticed a pot of sour cream.
what's this? i asked.
natural plain yoghurt right?
...
must say, if you can't read english i could so see how a pot of yoghurt and a pot of sour cream looks so similar!
as sour cream is not a common ingredient in japanese cuisine i said not to worry, i'll find some way to use it.
decided to make a popular dish in okinawa; taco rice (タコライス).
basically it's like the mexican taco dish but the filling is served on a bed of rice rather than wrapped up in a tortilla.
and only a dollop of sour cream is needed mind you (what am i gonna do with all the left over sour cream!?)
so i scored brownie points for making dinner (and washing up!) but the next morning k-chan woke up with stomach cramps...
sh*t (no pun intended), i'm fine so it couldn't really have been my taco rice which caused her to visit the ladies room so often, could it?

mmm. looks great! never heard about the dish, but i'm sure i'd love it! because i love sour cream!! in my view you can put sour cream on almost anything. i even tried it on a salmon nigiri two weeks ago. it worked! haha.

shopping for pots and cooking are two different things for me.
i love shopping but i often don't enjoy cooking...
i have my reasons though!

i'm sure there are some fun ways of using sour cream, but this was the safest way to make a dent in the pot.

That dinner looks fabulous and I am now set on going out to find some sour cream. I think I have to go three towns over but nevermind.
